My husband and I are really interested in applying to be Resident Counselors at a school/group home here in NC. Right now, I'm in my last semester finishing up a bachelor's degree in Crisis Counseling and doing an internship and it just makes sense for us to wait until I graduate in May to seek employment. My question is this: We have a few facilities we are interested in but one we are REALLY interested in. That facility is hiring now, but it's not the right time for us now. Is it unreasonable to think they may still be hiring this summer? How often to places like this typically have to hire someone new? We have friends that work at this facility and they love it, they've told us to make sure we write them down as referring us because they said it will really help. He mentioned that due to the nature of the job, they typically hire fairly often. Is this common?

I assure you that if you are not yet ready to be houseparents, there will be a position available for you when you are or shortly there after.  Being a Houseparent is a very difficult job and has a pretty high turnover rate. Even your best ran larger facilities are always looking for staff.

Not knowing the facility you are referring to, I can only make a general assumption, but chances are they will have a position then. If not, my philosophy has alway been, work where you can until you can work where you want. Keeping in mind that working where can, may turn out to be where you want. The facility that I am now an administrator at and have been at for 13 years, was a place I was only planning to be a stop over until I could find a place closer to family out west.  I did look at other facilities over the years but never found one I thought we would like better than where we were.

Thanks for your help! (I'm not sure if it's okay to say the place we're looking into so I'm sorry if I am not!) The place we are looking into is the Crossnore School in NC. It seems like they are looking for staff fairly regularly, but I guess being new to this work I wasn't really sure what to expect there.

I realize that the work can be really difficult working with at risk kids but can you tell me if there are other reasons (and what they are) for there being a high turn over rate?

Don't mean to intrude on conversation. My husband and I looked and prayed about where God would place us and God did the work and the guiding. We looked for a while.
But in the 6 months we have been here we have had a high turnover rate. Our administration is AMAZING!!! But, sadly people come into this type of ministry with the wrong intentions, therefore after they figure out it isn't just a sit around and live for free kind of job it's just a matter of how much patients they have before they leave. Sad :/ especially for the kiddos!
