Stepping Up

So we are down to the wire on the ’08 school season and my faith in the future generation of this great country is at the breaking point. I’m struggling with the thought that the future Governor of South Carolina is probably the boy that just shot me in the back of the head with a Nerf dart gun. How will the South ever rise again at this rate?

Anyone in residential child care can tell you that one of the biggest social problems the kids face is “Welfare Mentality”. After being in the system for so long, they get very familiar to certain rights and privileges that are provided by the state. Many children in a group home are accustomed to several vacation trips a year, an insane amount of toys at Christmas and a more generous clothing allowance than your average 15 year old gets. Add that with a survivor mentality that so many of these kids have had to learn because no one else was looking out for them, and you end up with a kid that is only concerned about me, myself and I.

Are the kids to blame? No, I am convinced all these kids are doing the best they can to make a go of it in this life, even the ones that are on a self destruct course. All of us have had to learn to do the best we can with the tools we got.

So last week when I took the boys up to Greenville, SC to help with a meal for the homeless that our church does monthly with “Nothing But Jesus Street Ministry” and Bikers For Christ, I was surprised at how awesome they did. Watching our boys walk around and talk to the homeless, serve drinks and collect trash on a 90 degree day in the middle of a parking lot made me want cry with pride. They stepped up and served others. Without even knowing it, they shared Christ’s love with complete strangers and treated them with more respect and dignity than what the City of Greenville does. For once, they were doing something for someone else without seeing it as benefiting them somehow.

I love these boys, and moments like this I will remember for the rest of my life. Thank you God for giving me the best job on the planet. -Launch
